PhD Council Newsletter June 2019

Dear PhDs, Junior Lecturer and Junior researcher,

We are very pleased that so many of you participated at the 8th annual PhD-Day! Since then, we have been working on the agenda of the upcoming months and we are excited to provide you with some updates of our work:

  1. Summertime picnics

Summer is here! Time to enjoy the good weather and meet new fellow PhDs, Junior Lecturers and Junior Researchers at our weekly picnics. Every last Wednesday of the month at 12pm we will meet in front of the Vening Meinesz building and then walk to the Botanical Gardens together. This will be about not only being connected via mailing lists but spending some time together and get to know each other in a nice atmosphere. Please bring your own food and let the people around you know. Blankets will be provided. We hope to see you on June 26th, July 31st and August 28th !

  1. Save the date: Fun games evening!

On the 18th July we are organizing a Fun Games Evening to give an active touch to our social events.  More details will follow soon!

  1. Link to grant opportunity website

In this year’s PhD Day, we had a workshop on “Research support: Career and Funding opportunities”, held by Bas Leeflang from the faculty’s research support office. We want to suggest that the research support office provides an extremely helpful service to find individual grants for various PhD-related purposes. This link brings you to a customized inquiry for grant opportunities for Geoscience PhD students: https://www.researchprofessional.com/funding/search/92326688#1557144358201. Utrecht University has a subscription to this service. You can log in with your solis ID and look for grants.

We would like to conclude by welcoming our new PhD council members Allix Baxter (Earth Sciences) and Steven Weisscher (Physical Geography)!

We hope to see you soon during our upcoming events!

Best wishes,

The Geo PhD Council
